Astronomers
In 1959, Cambridge University appointed Martin Ryle to a new Chair of Radio Astronomy; in 1972 he was appointed Astronomer Royal. He and Antony Hewish worked under J.A.Ratcliffe at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. Ryle and Hewish were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1974 for their pioneering research in radio astrophysics: Ryle for his observations and inventions, in particular of the aperture synthesis technique and Hewish for his decisive role in the discovery of pulsars. Winning the Nobel Prize raised the international profile of British science, and also popularized it. Hewish contributed to the Royal Institution’s well-known Christmas lectures, which were televised and became annual media events because of their accessibility, particularly to the young.
